CHARLESTOWN, R.I. –
Four teens injured in a car crash early Sunday morning in Charlestown were partying with alcohol at the home of a Chariho School Committee member prior to the crash, a source close to the investigation told NBC 10.

All of the teenagers attend Chariho Regional High School.

Grover Champlin and Bryan Thweatt, both 15, suffered minor injuries.

However, 17-year-old Lyle Topa remains in critical condition while sources told NBC 10 that 16-year-old John Lamotte is in a coma.

The students were injured after the car they were riding in crashed into a tree on Carolina Back Road in Charlestown. Only one teen was wearing a seat belt.

The four students were not at Chariho’s homecoming dance that took place earlier that night.

A source close to the investigation told NBC 10 that speed and alcohol were involved and that the teens were attending a party at a home on Kenyon Hill Trail in Richmond belonging to Chariho School Committee member Terri Serra.

Serra is said to be cooperating with police. She told them that she fell asleep in the house, and awoke to find about a dozen teens partying in a trailer out back, which she then broke up.

Police chiefs in Richmond and Charlestown refused to identify the owner of the home saying it was part of their investigation.

Phone calls and e-mails placed to Serra have gone unanswered.

Counselors were at the high school on Monday.

“The building was incredibly quiet and solemn. It was very sad. There was a kind of pervasive sadness within the building. Some kids are angry. The kids were wearing white as a sign of hope,” said Barry Ricci, superintendent of the Chairho Regional School District.

A Facebook page, “Pray For Lyle, Bryan, John, Grover” has been set up, and family and friends are leaving messages.

“We’ll get through this, but there is a lot of hurt today,” Ricci said.

Rhode Island RI Car Accident and Personal Injury Lawyer Brenda L. Fortune: Middletown DMV Closing

08 Feb

MIDDLETOWN, R.I.
The Middletown branch of the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles will be closing on Friday.

To accommodate residents, the Wakefield DMV branch will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

But some see that as just more time and money.

“Gas prices at $3.20, now you’re adding time, and you’re increasing the cost of it. It’s already pretty expensive and time consuming so I don’t think it will go over too well,” said Charlie Burns of Portsmouth.

Middletown was one of only two locations in the state for teenagers to take their road tests. After Friday, all of them will be done at the site on Melrose Street in Providence.

“In Providence roads are confusing. It’s one ways and stuff, so I decided to come here instead,” said Alyssa Lannon of West Warwick.

The building’s lease is expiring. The state is now looking for another site on Aquidneck Island.

“When their lease comes up, couldn’t they just renew their lease? I know when my lease comes up for my apartment, I renew it. Who do you have to talk to find out what’s really going on,” said Roshown Massey of Newport.

Sally Strachan, DMV administrator, said they knew last year they wanted a new location that would better meet their needs.

“People were really working hard to try to make this work in a way that we would not be without a home,” she said.

“We knew the lease was running out as long as we’ve had the lease. We did issue request for proposals in the spring and didn’t get any response to that the first time around.”

When the lease ran out, Strachan said the DMV extended it month to month hoping to find a new space.

The building’s landlord has a new tenant that wants to move in leaving a gap in service in Middletown.

“I really want people to know we have a commitment to Aquidneck Island,” Strachan said.

The DMV said it hopes to find a new location by July 1.

Accidents down at 195-95 split
RIDOT data says crashes down 40% min.
Updated: Friday, 14 Jan 2011, 6:53 PM EST
Published : Friday, 14 Jan 2011, 6:53 PM EST

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – The $623-million Iway appears to be money well spent. RIDOT told our news partners, the Providence Journal, accidents and crashes are way down at the rebuilt route 195-95 interchange.

The DOT’s new data shows total crashes, crashes where only property was damaged, and accidents with injuries or deaths are all down by more than 40 percent:

Before (10/3/06 to 10/3/07)

•Total crashes 324
•Property damage only 252
•Accidents with injuries 72
After (11/1/09 to 11/1/10)

•Total crashes 178 (45% drop)
•Property damage only 143 (43% drop)
•Accidents with injuries 35 (51% drop)
They credit the improved design of the new interchange. Among them: Sharp curves were dumped. The famed left exits and onramps — from 95 South to 195 East, sending that traffic into the high speed lanes — and 195 West to 95 South — vanished. The latter forced a driver coming from Massachusetts or East Providence to Rhode Island hospital — to scramble across traffic from the 95 ramp on the left to the exit on the right.
